College Football

AF final regular season game...where did the season go.  Sitting at 8-3 it would be nice to finish with a W but going into Texas to steal one might be tough.  With a win we might get a better bowl but we shall see.  I think we lose a tight one 21 - 17.

Last week's gun and fun has Notre Dame sinking Navy, Wisconsin scoring 18 unanswered points in the 4th to beat Minnesota...the battle of lakes and freezing temps, New Mexico St losing to Fresno St (which by the way, what state is Fresno?)

Week lucky 13 matchups...battle of 1-6 Indiana teams with Purdue and Hoosiers, battle for Tennessee with Vols and Vanderbilt battling, and what exactly is Citadel doing playing Florida in the Swamp?

College Football

Once again I missed a weekend. Not for sure where the time goes but AF beat up on CSU last weekend and is 8-2 going into the last two games against BYU and TCU. All is all a good season regardless of the final two games. Certainly a chance tomorrow at home against BYU but with history on BYU's side I would imagine it will be a long tomorrow. Then a final game at TCU. Maybe we can win one and finish 9 - 3. Anyway you cut it, it was another strong showing the only real disappointment was the loss to Navy. Keep the fingers crossed that we get to go bowling again this year. Anyway I think AF will be tough tomorrow but end up on the wrong side with a 30 - 17 loss.

Two weeks ago notorious match ups: Kansas beat up on Kansas St (king corn), W beats E in Michigan, key preseason basketball match up for Duke and Wake Forest (with Wake Forest winning in OT with a 3 pointer), and finally a once proud conflict between Oklahoma and Nebraska with Oklahoma head and shoulders above their northern cousin.

College Football

Two good wins for AF since the last post. Last Thursday game against New Mexico snuck up on me. The Force stands at 6-2 for the season with 4 to play. Off to West Point for tomorrow's game. Hopefully we can salvage a game for the C&C trophy. Again pretty disappointing that we can't secure the trophy from winning this game. As usual this should be a close fought game. I expect to come out on top with a 21 - 17 victory. With the next opponent being CSU we could sneak into the BYU game at 8-2! Not bad for a freshman led team.

Two weeks ago fun and exciting look included: W Michigan and Central Michigan (Central is the king!) Vandy and UGA (Vandy can't get over the hump or out from between the hedges) Big time Big Ten match up of Ohio St and Michigan St (pathetic play by MSU allows for easy win for Ohio State).

College Football

AF got back to its winning ways by beating San Diego St. 35-10. Led by a freshman backfield, the trial by fire begins. This week we are in Las Vegas to fight those pesky UNLV runnin rebels. We swoop in as favorites by 4 (started at 5.5). Can the freshman continue the winning ways? At 4-2 we have a relatively easy streak of 3 games against NM, Army, CSU after this weekend. That would put us at 8-2 going home against BYU and closing out at TCU. But as they say take one game at a time.

Last week's adventures include Wash St and Oregon St (Oregon St rolled wiht 66 points and WSU is 42 point underdogs against USC this week...), LSU and Florida (Florida put a hurting on the Tigers scoring 51...), and Toledo and Michigan (think Michigan can beat this Ohio school?...that answer would be a resounding NO).

This week's fun and exciting look includes: W Michigan and Central Michigan (what about E Michigan? Is this bigger than State and Michigan?) Vandy and UGA (can Vandy win a big SEC game? and between the hedges?) Big time Big Ten matchup of Ohio St and Michigan St (bragging rights and is Ohio St looking forward to next weeks matchup with Penn St?)

Absolutely no comment about last weekend.  That makes 6 in a row...what is up with that?  Let's hope we get the mojo back against the cellar dwellers that is San Diego State (who I think has never been to a bowl game, ever!).

Last week's games of interest included Florida State winning over Miami in an offensive shoot out (gee what happened to the good defense?),  Vandy beating Auburn (??? doh gotta love college football), and the battle of Louisiana between Lafayette and Monroe had Lafayette pulling it out.  This week's adventures include Wash St and Oregon St (which is bigger UW vs Oregon or the battle of the states?), LSU and Florida (wow I had no ideal with the OU Texas match up this weekend), and Toledo and Michigan (think Michigan can beat this Ohio school?).

College Football

Big game for the Falcons tomorrow.  Time to sink Navy!  Navy currently holds a 5 game winning streak against Air Force.  I thought with Calhoun coming in last year he would fire the team up and smash that 4 game win streak.  Navy is 3 - 2 and Air Force stands 3 - 1.   I wouldn't expect a lot of passes in tomorrow's game in fact it should be a pretty quick ground control game.  I think the Falcons will win game one of the commander's chief trophy.  I predict a battle but AF coming out on top 17 - 14.

Games of interest include Florida State and Miami (boy that would have been interesting 20 years ago...),  Auburn and Vandy (huh??? two ranked teams?  wow), and the battle of Louisiana between Lafayette and Monroe.

College Football

Utah visits 3-0 (!) Air Force on Saturday. After last year's AF 20 - 12 win (first in 5 years) the Utes might be looking for a bit of revenge after being denied two chances of scoring from the 1 yard line at home last year. They certainly are coming in hot having scored 42 and 58 against UNLV and Utah St and going into the Big House and beating Michigan. Air Force played in front of 2,500 people last weekend. The game had been moved from Houston to SMU in Dallas. So the high school match up had AF beating Houston without completing a single pass! (7 attempts). Anyway I predicted another loss (after this game a 1-3 record?) and I think this might be the weekend. I think it will be a shoot out..35 - 17. But it is at home so maybe we can squeak one by (4-0 going into the Navy game would probably make us ranked?).

Last week's exciting games included (my opinion) had Wyoming beating North Dakota St (barely), Notre Dame winning, Vanderbilt beat Rice, and oh yeah USC wallowed the Buckeyes. This week's exciting games include Florida and Tenn (beat down of the Vols...), Massachusetts and Texas Tech (Mass has a football team?), and the religious battle of TCU and SMU.

College Football

Well color me stupid.  AF really came out and handed it to Wyoming.  Now granted the game was a bit close and only became a laugher late in the game.  We won 23 - 3.  Now up is Houston from Conference USA.  The game has been moved to Dallas because of the Hurricane.  I have no ideal what to expect.  I thought it might be another loss.  The line in Vegas started at 3.5 (Houston) went to 5 then back down a bit.  So a tight one but I think their QB might be a bit much.  Final score 31 - 24...AF comes home to Utah next week.

Interesting games of the week...last week Idaho won the great potato and Western Kentucky won whatever and well Miami has fallen a great deal.  This week's exciting games include North Dakota St and Wyoming (whew better match up if it had been in November), ohh the loser bowl of Michigan and Notre Dame (can we get a 0 - 0 game), Rice and Vanderbilt (yikes),  and and this little battle between a LA school and one from the buckeye state.

College Football

Good 41 - 7 win last week against Southern Utah.  Good starting point for the season.  Facing off against someone besides your own defense and at game speed is always good.  Next up is Wyoming.  We won 20 - 10 last year at Air Force and now hold a 24-20-2 record against the 'Pokes.  Vegas has given the edge to Wyoming starting at 1 and moving to 3 with and O/U at 42.5.  A lot of unknowns in this game which probably means a blow out by someone.  I predicted a lost just because it is early in the season and AF has a lot of young starters.  Wyoming has an untested QB but supposedly has an arm.  Pass defense has never been a strong point with AF.  Anyway when all is said it done I predict a 27 - 14 win by Wyoming.

Interesting games of the week...that in state battle of Idaho and Idaho State (wonder what the bragging rights are there?), Western Kentucky battles Eastern Kentucky (??? wooooo), and probably the only national game of interest would be the lowly Miami Hurricanes facing the Gators. In the past this would have meant something but right now not so much.

Air Force Football

Yup hard to believe another college football season is already here. First weekend cupcake games are upon us. AF is definitely in a rebuilding mode. Lots of young players getting their collective feet's wet. Calhoun's second season to start making strides. Last year was a great year but with experience of a 4 year starter at quarterback one can kind of assume success. This year might be a bit tougher. Looking at the season I think a 7 - 5 record is achievable with a one game being a swing game. My breakdown:

Air Force Basketball

As an AF grad I try to follow AF sports. Obviously Football is easiest to follow but I've always been a big basketball fan. Nothing like going into a warm gym on a cold winter's night to watch a game. Although Football is America's sport, I believe that College Basketball is our unrequited love (Baseball is our conscious)! Anyway before the 2003 - 2004 season there really wasn't any reason to follow AF basketball. They were an average team capable of beating the nobodies (assuming we weren't a nobody!) but getting spanked in conference play (see below for winning percentage of overall, grey boxes and conference play, blue boxes).

Even before conference play in 1980 we were a .500 team at best. Two early tournament invites (1960 and 1962) and then nothing. About the only claim to fame is that Gregg Popovich was team Captain back in late 60s. One other blip was two WAC tournament wins during the 89 - 90 season. Overall AF is 602 - 751 (including this year). They have had 52 seasons so the average record is 12 - 14 with a .445 winning percentage. As mentioned pretty average. Conference record has been abysmal at 113 - 313 averaging 4 - 11 record and a winning percentage of .265. Of course this includes the last 5 years when AF went 98 - 39 (conference 43 - 17)!!!! Take these wins out and we had a conference record of 70 - 296....ughhh....wonder why no one watched AF basketball. Obviously in 2003 all this changed. A new attitude (a winning attitude) and a new offensive (Princeton) and AF basketball landed on the map. Unfortunately our two NCAA appearances were against prominent teams like N Carolina and Illinois. We played good in the first half but the talent came through in the second halves. Last year we did make to the NIT Final Four losing a heart breaker to Clemson. The amazing thing is that over this 5 year period we have had 4 coaches! When did AF become the test bed for new hot coaches? Scott and his crony Mooney were expected (funny how Scott couldn't succeed at Princeton and is now back in Colorado at DU) and then of course the traitor who left for more money and Colorado...a real disappointment...I really thought his home was AF but I guess you can't take egos out of coaches. Anyway AF is 8 - 4 going into conference play this year. Hopefully they can be respectable and continue what was started 5 years ago.

College Football

A satisfactory first year for Calhoun as he restored some pride to the AF football team. A great 9-3 record with the only real disappointment being a loss to Navy and the possible return of the Commanders and Chiefs trophy. Of AF's 3 losses, two were very winnable and the only game they had real no shot at was the BYU game. A 11-1 record was certainly there but 9-3 is good and one win better than I predicted. A second place conference finish and a bowl berth to the Armed Forces Bowl on 12/31 has capped off a great season.

A big 41 - 24 win against Notre Dame. Not that Notre Dame is any good and with back to back losses to service academies, I am guessing life isn't too grand in South Bend these days. Chad Hall continues to play well and is getting some Heisman talk. Our final regular game is this weekend with San Diego St coming to town. We first played San Diego University (I assume this was San Diego St) in 1956. We hold a 17 - 9 lead in the series. We used to dominate them but lately they have had our number. At 8 - 3, AF can put a nice end to a good season...a loss makes my prediction good but I will be greedy and go for one more! Plus I tend to think we play San Diego better here in Colorado and I predict this to be an easy one. AF wins 35 - 14.

Fantastic 30 - 10 win against Army. Army isn't any good but we won and went to 7 - 3. Chad Hall had a terrific game with 275 yards beating his previous best of 256 yards. Now we go into Notre Dame and are favorites by 3 points! I believe this to be the kiss of death. Good golly when was the last time any service academy went into South Bend as a favorite. Two more wins and a very respectable season for the Force. Air Force trails the series against Notre Dame 5-22. We first played Notre Dame back in 1964. We did have a 4 game winning streak in 1982. What can you say, Navy just won for the first time in 43 tries. I predict this isn't going to be easy, I predict an AF loss 21 - 20.

Tough loss at New Mexico, 31-34. Hopefully we can win one against the other service academy. Not a big fan of losing both to Army and Navy during one season especially for someone who never lost to Army or Navy while at the Academy. Air Force leads the series 28-12-1 (that is .663 winning percentage against our service academy teams 53-26-1). We first played the Army back in 1959 (while Army was still good and started with an auspicious tie 13-12). Since 1989 we are 16-2!. I predict a close one at home tomorrow with an AF victory - 28 - 14.

Another good solid win against CSU 45 - 21. Now comes the tough part of the schedule. This is the stretch that in past years AF has gone 0'fer and missed out on a bowl game. This weekend Wyoming, then a quick week and Thursday game against New Mexico, then Army, then at Notre Dame, and finishing with San Diego. I see at least 3 wins which would put us at 8-4 and a decent chance to go bowling. Not for sure which Wyoming team will show up this weekend. They have had some good wins and then some not so good wins. Good coach but just haven't been getting it done. Vegas started the line at 3.5 and it moved to 2.5 by this weekend. Obviously Vegas isn't giving AF any love at home. I will be attending the game so I will bring some luck...ha! Air Force leads the series 23-20-2. We first played the Wyoming Freshman back in 1955. And who could forget the 1977 0-0 tie. I predict a close one at home tomorrow with an AF victory - 21 - 14.

A good solid win against UNLV 31 - 14. Nothing flashy just a good win against a team we should win against. Next up a tough O - fer Colorado State team that always seems to play AF tough. Vegas seems to realize this by only making AF a 3.0 favorite. I gave CSU a benefit of the doubt during preseason but I think this should be an AF win. I give it a close 27 - 24 back and forth game. Air Force leads the series 26-19-1. We first played the CSU Freshman back in 1955. Obviously they owned us the last couple of years. There was an interesting lost back in 1993 when AF loss 5 - 8...interesting baseball score! Tough game next week against Wyoming.

Early season wins showed a new AF but the last two losses shows that Calhoun hasn't improved AF like I thought. A disappointing 31-20 loss to Navy (5th in a row!) shows that once again we aren't winning the battle for the academy athletes. I really thought an Academy Grad Coach would empower AF to go out and win his first service academy game. Alas not much to show for it (AF was a 2.5 point underdog). Now we have UNLV. We first played UNLV why back in 1981. We hold a 8-4 record against them over the years. AF is actually favored by 5.5 (6 mid-week). I see a comeback 24 - 10 win.

Well I didn't expect them to go undefeated but I thought we'd play BYU a bit tougher. A 31-6 blowout (AF was a 11.5 point underdog) and now our first test against our service academy breathren. We first played Navy why back in 1960, them played them off and on until the commander's and chief trophy came into being in 1972. We hold a 25-14 record against them over the years. We did have a 11 year winning streak from '82 - '92. Currently the goats have a four game win streak. They are favored by 2.5 (3 mid-week). The Denver Post has them losing 31 - 24. I say with an academy grad has a head coach there will be no losing to Navy...extra incentive! I see a 27 - 14 win.

Hey, hey, hey how about those Falcons. Beating TCU last Thursday night, 20-17, coming behind in the 4th quarter with 2 TDs then winning it in overtime. What a big game (AF opened as a 7 point underdog which moved to 8 by gameday) and now we head back to Utah for a game against our nemesis, BYU. We first played BYU back in 1956 and since that lost we have gone 6-21 against them and have only managed a 2-10 record at BYU. The glory year that was 1985, AF went 12-1 and the only game they lost? Yup BYU. So an evenly matched set of teams over the last 7 years with big blow out wins and big scores. Don't think we will see that this weekend. Once again the Post picked them to lose 27 - 17 and I had this game as another loss. AF could be looking ahead to next weeks game against Navy. A win this weekend would help AF a long way to possibly winning a conference title. Unfortunately history says to me AF's luck will run out and they will lose 24 - 21.
