Harry Turtledove - How Few Remain

"The Army of Northern Virginia was breaking camp"

Well not what I expected. Thought there might be some more action but based on the fact that there are 10 novels after this I guess you could call this the prelude (?) or a set up. Concept is interesting as these 11 books make up the "Timeline 161" series because its basis is that General Order 161 issued by Lee was not found by the Union Forces before Antitiem and thus the Confederates go on to win the Civil War. Interesting concept.

The book takes place 20 years after the Civil War is over. The Confederates still are allied with France and Great Britain and make a play for Mexican land that will allow them access to the Pacific. The US doesn't like this and declares war. The book follow Jackson (didn't die), Lincoln (didn't die), Samuel Clemons (a San Fran newspaper reporter), a young Teddie Roosevelt, and Custer (didn't die).

The US tries to take Louisville (a prelude to World War I warfare), the US allies with Germany (interesting), Custer and Roosevelt become war heroes, Lincoln becomes a Marxist, and the author doesn't have high regard for Mormons. All in all an interesting concept. Will I tackle the next ten? Maybe...
